UNI has partnered with the City of Detroit LeadSafe Housing Program to help residents get lead out of their home. If you are a resident in the following zip codes 48209, 48210 and 48217, you could qualify!
Participation is simple, call, email or fill out the on-line form to see if you qualify. Our team will contact you, and walk you through the entire process.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
|
SOUTHWEST URBAN ARTS MURAL PROJECT (SUAMP)SUAMP engages youth in artistic, workforce development, and leadership skill building. Youth work with trained professional artists from the College for Creative Studies (CCS) Community Arts Partnership (CAP) to build their technical art skills. Youth spend the winter months honing their artistic skill set to prepare them to take on commissions in the neighborhood. In the summer, they are hired to help design and paint murals for residents, local businesses, and corporations.

Leaders in Training (LIT)Leaders In Training is a WIOA year-round comprehensive youth employment and education continuation program intended to engage, expose, and train youth and young adults ages 14-24 in Southwest Detroit. The program offers job readiness and leadership training, work-based learning experiences, and paid work experience. Youth will participate in activities to help them connect their long term goals with educational and employment steps needed to achieve them.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS
YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD (YAB)The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is the youth leadership of our organization, they are in charge of working with the Youth Development Director around program evaluation and decision-making, lead peer-to-peer listening campaigns, and plan and implement events and opportunities for youth in the neighborhood. YAB members participate in leadership training and plan projects and campaigns to address issues youth face in the neighborhood.

Quality Team (Q-Team)Q-Team is a youth leadership program that focuses on training youth in qualitative evaluations and assesses the quality of UNI's youth development programs. They are responsible for documenting our various programs by taking photos, videos and collecting narratives from participants. Youth assist the Impact and Improvement Coordinator in leading the Youth Program Quality Intervention (YPQI) process twice a year.

Engaging Leaders in Tomorrow's Education (ELITE)
ELITE is a youth leadership program that focuses on education organizing by identifying an issue from YAB's listening campaign and following the organizing cycle. Two members of ELITE will also sit on 482Forward's Youth Collective to also work citywide to address education issues in the city while also advocating for the educational issues in their Springwells community.

Alumni Network
A program that supports youth who are enrolled in college or pursuing a post-secondary education receive ongoing resources and tools to help them get to and through college and training.

OUT-OF-SCHOOL LEARNING
ALL SAINTS NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMAll Saints Neighborhood Center (ASNC) After School Program for youth ages 7 to 13 is based in our neighborhood center. We provide homework help, tutoring, and daily enrichment activities focusing on STEAM, technology, nutrition, and social emotional skill building.

EARN-A-BIKE PROGRAMOur Earn a Bike Program is for youth ages 10 to 18 housed at Southwest Rides Bikes and Board Shop. Youth take apart a bike and put in 24 hours of sweat equity to put the bike back together. They learn bike mechanics, safe ridership, and teamwork. After they complete the hours, youth earn a bike to take home with them.

OUT-OF-SCHOOL LEARNING
SUCCESSFUL NEIGHBORHOODS REQUIRE SAFE PLACES TO PLAY AND DO BUSINESSUrban Neighborhood Initiatives is committed to developing the physical infrastructure of the Springwells area by developing parks and green spaces in the neighborhood as well as by creating and sustaining economic growth. We work with residents to determine the best use of vacant land and buildings. UNI has committed to removing blight, developing parks, building community centers, and creating clean and safe alleys.

SOUTHWEST RIDES UNI developed Southwest Rides as a social-enterprise business subsidiary. Southwest Rides works to meet the transportation needs of youth and adults in Southwest Detroit through bicycle and skateboard sales and repair. It offers youth apprenticeship and our Earn-A-Bike program.
Our new Southwest Rides bike shop is located at 2026 Lawndale St. Detroit, MI 48209. |
